At the Great American Beer Festival

Thanks again to the Brewer’s Association for inviting us to do a series of book signings at the “Beer Geek Bookstore” at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival! (And congratulations to all the medal winners!) We had a sensational time in Denver, capped off by the book selling out before our third and final signing. Thank the gods we had extras in a van parked a few blocks away. Thank you one and all who bought our book, or just made the festival such a memorable experience. The only thing that could compete with the beer drinking was the people watching!

Check out a gallery of our GABF 2015 doings and drinkings.

We had a great time chatting with WBEZ-Chicago’s Andrew Gill about The Comic Book Story of Beer. And we deeply regret that cohost Alison Cuddy couldn’t join us for this one. Thanks to producer Joe DeCeault for inviting us when he first caught wind of the project way back in 2013!

Come Hit (Up) A Guy With Glasses! Pint Glasses!

Red plastic? Styrofoam? Aluminum cans? Fluted silver?

The hollowed-out horn of a, stinking, hulking, now-extinct aurochs?

Most beer lovers agree that their drink of choice is best enjoyed out of glass. Glass, after all, has many advantages over any other kind of drinking vessel. It has no aroma to speak of, thereby adding no unwanted flavor or scent notes to your quaff of choice. The shape of a glass may encourage the development of a head of foam, which in turn emanates the beverage’s alluring fragrance conveniently in the direction of the nose.

Glass, as The Comic Book Story of Beer takes into consideration on page 109, is also often clear. This trait allows the drinker to more fully experience a brew’s signature color—another way of heightening the experience.

And now you can overcrank the altimeter of your heightened experience with The Comic Book Story of Beer pint glasses!

Available in limited quantities for a limited time, you will only find these beauts where you find us: the creative team behind this scrappy little book. That is to say, at beer festivals, comics conventions, bookstores, and what else, we’ll see. For starters, we will be enthused indeed to give them away as thanks for preordering the book in advance of its September 22 sale date.

So check back at this website often or follow us on Twitter for the best way to grab one of these handsome and inducing tchotchkes.

A Pat on the Back (East)—from Beer Advocate

back_east_logoWhen you first get into brewing and beer culture, it can be like learning your first few power chords on electric guitar. Even a rank amateur can snap up some pretty quick and satisfying rewards.

But there is no replacement for expertise.

And The Comic Book Story of Beer coauthor Mike Smith, who has been a professional brewer for the last fifteen years, has his share of that. He has brought all that expertise to making this original graphic novel as accurate and enriching as a romp through the ages of beer can possibly be.

But Mike’s talents aren’t being wasted on the page. He is still head brewer at Back East Brewing in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

And Beer Advocate Magazine recently served up some gratifying acclaim for two of Mike’s recent co-creations.

Editors and magazine co-founders Jason and Todd Alström called Back East’s porter style a “benchmark-level brew” and their “Palate Mallet’ Double IPA a “creamy delight.”

Can’t wait for the reviews of the brand-new Summer Ale!

If you find yourself in similar strategic placement in the Northeast Corridor between Boston and New York City, look for both styles wherever you buy great beer.
